867,878. Making ribbed tubes; rolling; drawing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. March 4, 1959 [Jan. 8, 1958], No. 743/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In a method of forming longitudinal fins or ribs on an elongate metal article, the article is drawn through a series of spaced-forming dies, each comprising rotatable forming tools to form the fins progressively. Fins or ribs are formed on a metal tube by a series of dies 1, 2 . . . 10, each having 24 forming discs 13 mounted to rotate freely in a disc holder comprising three parts, e.g. the inner annulus 15 having tongues 18, Fig. 2, not shown, and outer annuli 16, 17 which parts are located by screws 21. The series of dies are integrally assembled by the screws 21, the sets of forming discs increasing progressively in diameter and the forming edges being successively modified from die to die. Openpitch helical ribs may be formed by slight rotation of the work during its advance discs in successive dies being slightly circumferentially offset from those in the preceding die. In a modification each die comprises grooved rolls 20 for forming ribs on a tube. The rolls are staggered from die to die to eliminate flash, while the grooves 22 remain in the same relative positions in space.
