Aerated starch is delivered from a hopper A to intermittently moving trays (not shown), mounted on slides 1, the starch is levelled off at a station B, (see Figs. 9, 10, not shown), surplus starch falling into a V-section container 23, mould impressions are made in the starch at C, and then the trays are accelerated on to a conveyer 3 travelling at slow speed, and the moulds are filled with confectionery by mechanism D. The filled trays are taken from the conveyer and after setting, the confectionery and starch is tipped into a shoot 44 leading to a rotary wire mesh drum 24. Here the starch is brushed from the confectionery, falls into the container 3 and is returned to the hopper A by conveyers 39, 40 and 41. The confectionery passes through a shoot extension 28 of the drum 24 on to a delivery conveyer 29. The intermittent motion of the trays is effected by cam and link mechanism Fig. 4, (not shown), so arranged as to make gentle initial contact with each tray. The accelerated movement of the trays on to the conveyer 3 is effected by mechanism seen in Fig. 3 (not shown). The drum 24 has supporting rings 25 mounted on " V " rollers 26 on drive shafts 27. One of the shafts 27 drives a cylindrical brush 32 which may be formed with a multi-start helical groove. The position of the brush 32 may be adjusted by a lever 34. The confectionery hopper D is mounted to swing in conformity with the movement of a tray along the conveyer 3 during a depositing operation, and then return to the next tray to be filled, (see Fig. 12 not shown). A metering pump, Fig. 13 (not shown), delivers a predetermined charge from the hopper D.
