In a machine for printing and issuing tickets which are made from a strip, and for printing on separate cards inserted into the machine, the insertion of a card automatically disables the ticket strip issuing mechanism, and the mechanism is restored to normal when the printed card is removed from the machine. The machine shown is substantially as described in Specification 619,673, and comprises a ticketfeeding roller 7 and a counter roller 8 for feeding the ticket strip 25 from a roll, a carbon ribbon 26 coated on both sides, and a record strip 9, each of which is fed from one roll to another, a cutter 22 for the ticket strip 25, and printing type on a head arranged below the strips. Normally, the counter-roller 8 is pressed against the feed-roller 7 intermittently to cause the ticket-strip to be fed, but when a separate card 2 is inserted through an opening 1 in the casing it trips a spring-loaded tongue 3 to rotate a shaft 4 carrying a retainer 5 which is moved into a position above the right-hand end of an arm 6. The arm 6 is periodically lifted at the right-hand end, against the action of a spring 28, by a link 15 which engages a recess 17 in the arm and is pivotally carried by a lever 13 which is rocked by cam discs 11 secured to a rocking-shaft 10. At the right-hand end, the arm 6 is slotted at 30 to engage over a fixed guide-pin 18, and at the other end it has a toothed segment 23 in engagement with a gear 24 secured to a stubshaft 21. The shaft of the counter roller 8 is eccentrically mounted in a sleeve rotatable on the shaft 21, so that normally the roller 8 engages the feed-roller 7 periodically for ticketfeeding. When a cord 2 is inserted, and the retainer 5 is moved thereby into a position above the slotted end of the arm 6 to prevent it rising, the arm 6 pivots about the pin 18, the segment 23 rotates the gear 24 and, due to eccentric mounting, the roller 8 is moved so that it cannot be engaged by the feed-roller 7. Thus the ticket strip 25 is not fed, and printing is effected on the lower side of the cord 2 which lies between the ticket strip and the carbon strip 26.
