Abstract

867,301. Ink-ribbon mechanisms. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 16, 1957 [Dec. 24, 1956], No. 39029/57. Class 100 (4) Automatic reversing arrangements. An inkribbon mechanism comprises a pair of spools 21 driven by pairs of gears 27, 37, the gears for each spool alternately meshing according to the position of a longitudinally shiftable shaft 10 having first cams 20 secured thereon and second cams 54 rotatably mounted thereon so that interaction of axially aligned surfaces of the cams causes axial movement of the shaft 10. When the ribbon on one spool is nearly exhausted, a button 61 engages a fork 60 on a lever 26 and a rod 62 is shifted to engage in a slot 52 in a member 50 integral with the second cam 54. When the left-hand spool is being driven, the shaft 10 is in rightward position with left-hand gears 29, 37 in engagement and right-hand gears disengaged. The right-hand cams are also in engagement so that upon movement of the rod 62 to lock the cam 54 continued rotation of the shaft 10 rotates the first cam 20 causing axial movement of the shaft 10 to the left, to disengage the drive to left-hand spool and engage that of the right. As the button 61 moves back from the fork 60 the rod 62 disengages from slot 50 but shaft 10 is held in new position by a snapover cam and lever arrangement 68-73. The drive from the typewriter or like machine is from a link 11 and a torsion spring clutch 12-16.
