Abstract
Anhydrous sodium sulphite, of grain size 0.09-0.75 mm. is prepared by heating sodium sulphite heptahydrate to split off the water of crystallisation, and separating the anhydrous sodium sulphite from the resulting aqueous suspension. The heating is carried out in at least two stages, the temperature in the first stage being maintained at 33.4 DEG C. to 40 DEG C., and increasing temperatures being maintained in the subsequent stage or stages, such that in the final stage a temperature of 90 DEG C. to 103 DEG C. is maintained. The residence times in the various stages are so adjusted that the desired grain size is obtained. The process may be carried out in continuous fashion by continuously supplying the sodium sulphite dry, moist or in aqueous suspension to the first stage and allowing the resulting liquid to flow through the following stages.
