Abstract
867,089. Frequency discriminators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 9, 1957 [Aug. 27, 1956], No. 26136/56. Class 40(5) Microwave frequency is stabilized by a discriminator comprising a waveguide directional coupler 3 to one arm 1 of which a received signal of frequency f 1 and local oscillator frequency f 2 are applied, so that they both pass to a limb 4 terminating in a crystal mixer 6 and circuit 7 tuned to the nominal receiver I.F., and to a limb 5 terminating in a mismatch 8 with dummy load 9. Energy of frequencies f 1 , f 2 reflected from the mismatch 8 (both 90 degrees phase shifted) and energy reflected from the circuit 7 then passes to the fourth limb 2 and to a detector 10 and is amplitude modulated at the tuned frequency (I.F.) of circuit 7 to a depth and phase sense dependent on the magnitude and sense of any frequency error between (f 1 -f a ) and the tuning of circuit 7. A reference voltage equal to that from the mismatch 8 above may then be subtracted from the detected output to give a voltage of polarity varying with the sense of the frequency error, applied as an A.F.C. voltage to the local oscillator to stabilize the I.F. Specification 820,205 is referred to.
