Abstract
Norcamphidine and 2-substituted norcamphidines of the formula: <FORM:0866802/IV (b)/1> in which R represents hydrogen or a hydrocarbon residue, are prepared by reacting hydrazoic acid, in an inert solvent, with norbornylene, norborneol, or norbornyl halide in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a concentrated mineral acid, an anhydrous metal salt, or an inorganic acid halide, the norcamphidein formed by ring enlargement then being either reduced with nascent hydrogen or by catalytic hydrogenation, or reacted with an organometallic compound, for example of the formula R-Li or R-Mg-halide (where R is a hydrocarbon residue) to give the saturated base norcamphidine or a 2-hydrocarbon-substituted homologue thereof, respectively. Hydrohalide and tin halide salts are described.
