Abstract
<PICT:0865939/III/1> A process for producing a chloride from an oxide comprises forming a fluidized bed containing carbon and an oxide, passing an electric current between spaced electrodes and through the solids in the bed, thereby heating the bed due to the electrical resistance of the carbon, and passing chlorine through the bed. An apparatus which may be used in carrying out the process comprises an outer layer of fire brick 7, an inner layer of hard refractory 8, a feed inlet 9 for solid materials, a gas inlet and outlet 14 and 12 respectively, and spaced graphite electrodes 16 and 17. Borontrichloride is produced by reacting boric oxide and chlorine in the presence of carbon in a slightly modified apparatus. A further form of apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) comprises a carbon or graphite electrode mounted axially in a carbon or graphite cylinder forming the other electrode and provided with a gas inlet and outlet and an arrangement for feeding solids to the cylinder. This apparatus may be used to chlorinate a metal oxide to produce a metal chloride. ZrCl4 and SiCl4 are produced by feeding a mixture of milled zircon and calcined coke into a chlorine gas stream which is fed into a bed of calcined petroleum coke fluidized with nitrogen. Aluminium chloride is produced by feeding a mixture of aluminium oxide and coke to the chlorine gas. Silicon tetrachloride is produced by feeding a mixture of silica and coke to the gas. Modified forms of the apparatus are used to carry out the following reactions. ZrCl4 and SiCl4 are produced by feeding a mixture of granular zircon and calcined coke to a point below the surface of the fluidized bed, the chlorine being fed in separately. TiCl4 is produced by feeding a mixture of rutile and coke to a point above the surface of a bed of calcined coke fluidized with nitrogen which is later replaced by chlorine. BCl3 is produced by using a mixture of boron oxide and coke. NbOCl3, TaCl5 and other chlorides, e.g. NbCl5, are produced by chlorination of a niobium ore by two processes, in one of which gases from a first reaction are used to fluidize a second bed. VCl4 is produced from commercial oven dried V2O5 consisting of approximately 95% V2O5 and 5% Na2O present as sodium metavanadate.
