Abstract
865,882. Liquid meters. ESSO RESEARCH & ENGINEERING CO. Jan. 12, 1960 [June 8, 1959], No. 1073/60. Class 69 (1). [Also in Group XXXVII] Apparatus for calibrating a meter 11 in a pipe line 12 comprises a calibration vessel 22 which may be fluidly connected into the pipe line 12, a pulse generator 13 operatively connected to the meter, switching means 15 operated by means of the pulse generator, counter means 17 connected to the switch means 15, contacts 28, 29 electrically connected to the switch means 15, the contacts being adjacent to each end of and projecting into, the calibration vessel 22 and operable, through sequential tripping by fluid flow through the calibration vessel 22, to cause pulses from the pulse generator 13 to be fed to the counter means 17. In operation, as shown in Fig. 1, the pulse generator 13 is emitting pulses to an electronic switch 15. By manipulation of 3-way valves 19, 21, the fluid flow from the pipe line 12 may be introduced into either end of a calibration barrel 22. Assuming the flow in the barrel 22 to be in the direction of the arrows, the fluid pushes a plug member 23 along the barrel until it trips the switch 28 which causes the electronic switch 15 to switch the pulses from the generator 13 into the electronic counter 17. When the plug 23 contacts the switch 29, the electronic counter 15 will short the pulses around a transistor so blocking the pulses to the counter 17. The reading on the counter can then be compared with the known volume of the calibration barrel. The reverse flow through the barrel 22 will allow a check calibration of the meter. Thus when the pulse generator 13 is operatively connected to the meter the number of pulses will indicate the volume of fluid passing through the meter. In a modification, shown in Fig. 5, the calibration vessel is a vertically arranged tank and the flow indicating means comprises liquid level indicators 86, 87 having sensing probes 90, 91 respectively.
