Abstract

A solvent composition for vinyl resins consists essentially of an aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of benzene, toluene, xylene, or a mixture thereof, and from 9% to 75% by weight of propylene carbonate based on the combined weight of propylene carbonate and the aromatic hydrocarbon. Viscosities are compared for combinations of propylene carbonate and/or xylene with polymers derived from vinyl chloride alone or mixtures thereof with (a) vinyl acetate, (b) vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride, and (c) vinylidene chloride. The hydrolysed copolymer of vinyl chloride with (a) and a polymer derived from vinyl acetate alone are also specified. The effectiveness of the solvent composition as a solvent for copolymers of vinyl chloride with (a) containing less than 90% by weight of vinyl chloride is indicated, such a mixture being used to form a film on tinplate. Unspecified pigments, dyes, waxes may be included in the resin mixture. Specification 758,489 is referred to.ALSO:A solvent composition for vinyl resins consists essentially of an aromatic hydrocarbon consisting of benzene, toluene, xylene, or a mixture thereof, and from 9% to 75% by weight of propylene carbonate based on the combined weight of propylene carbonate and the aromatic hydrocarbon. In an example a composition consisting of a 87% vinyl chloride/13% vinyl acetate copolymer in a solvent of 67% xylene and 33% propylene carbonate is filmed on tinplate at about 4.7 mg/sq.in. and baked thereon at about 335 DEG F. (168 DEG C.) for ten minutes. The weight of the residual coating is 18% of the total weight of the solution. The solvent composition is said to be a useful solvent for copolymers of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate containing less than 90% by weight of vinyl chloride. Specification 758,489 is referred to.
