Abstract

865,467. Amplifier characteristics measuring. BUSH & RANK CINTEL Ltd. March 9, 1959 [March 7, 1958], No. 7388/58. Class 37. The input-output transfer characteristic of an amplifier 3 is tested by applying an exponentially time varying voltage cyclically to the input of the amplifier 3 the output voltage of which is applied to the input of a logarithmic amplifier 5 so that deflection plates 9 of a cathode-ray oscilloscope 10 deflect the electron beam according to the logarithm of the output of amplifier 3, whilst deflection plates 11 deflect the beam according to a linear time-base generated by circuit 12 in synchronism with the exponential voltage. Generator 1 which produces the cyclic exponential voltage, and circuit 12 are controlled by signals applied to terminal 2. A linear amplifier 8 may be included between amplifier 5 and oscilloscope 10. In operation, switch 4 is set to select the output of generator 1 and switch 6 is set to connect amplifier 5 directly to amplifier 8. The oscilloscope trace should then be a straight line, preferably sloping at 45 degrees. The output of amplifier 3 is then selected by switch 4, the oscilloscope displaying the transfer characteristic plotted in logarithmic co-ordinates. Assuming the cyclic voltage x = e<SP>-kt</SP>, where k is a constant, and amplifier 3 has an output y = x<SP>γ</SP>, that is y =e<SP>-γkt</SP>, the slope of the above display at any point is y. By including a differentiating circuit 7 between amplifiers 5 and 8, a plot of y versus the logarithm of the input voltage is obtained. Specifications 843,828 and 865,466 are referred to.
