Abstract
865,144. Automatic circuit - breakers. CHASE-SHAWMUT CO. Aug. 13, 1957 [Aug. 13, 1956], No. 25571/57. Class 38 (5). [Also in Group XXXVI] Current-limiting back-up fuses in circuitbreakers are made with synthetic resin-glass cloth laminate casings which would normally be damaged by the thermal effects of small overloads, but the circuit-breaker overload device operates before such overloads can damage the fuse casings. The theory underlying the invention is described in detail with the aid of graphs (Figs. 1 to 5, not shown). As shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the breaker and fuses are mounted in a moulded case 1 and cover 2 having channels 1b for the breaker poles and partitions 1k separating the poles and fuses. The latter are in parallel with resistors 45 which allow sufficient current to flow to trip the breaker after the fuse has blown. The moving contacts 7 are carried on arms 5 pivoted at 20 and coupled together by an insulating bar 18. Manual operation is effected by movement of a handle 10 which causes a tension-spring 24 to move the centre pivot 23 of toggle links 21, 22 to open or close the contacts. The link 21 is pivoted at 25<SP>1</SP> on a latch 26 pivoted at 27 and normally held by a bar 29 which can be rotated, to release the latch 26 and trip the breaker, by a sleeve 40 under the action of an armature 37 or a second latch 43 pivoted at 43<SP>1</SP>. The armature 37 is acted upon by laminations 36 surrounding the main conductor 30 and the latch is acted upon by a spring 44 when it is released by a bimetal strip 33. The fuse casing may be melamine-glasscloth laminate. Fuses in casings according to the invention are stated to be smaller than normal fuses whose casings have to withstand the full thermal effects of currents in accordance with their fusing characteristics.
