Abstract

864,664. Hydraulic couplings. SCHWITZER CORPORATION. Feb. 12, 1959 [Feb. 17, 1958], No. 4903/59. Class 69 (2). An hydraulic coupling for transmitting torque from an engine crankshaft to an accessory comprises a housing having oppositely facing walls 16, 18 which are relatively movable to vary the spacing therebetween, and a rotor 37 having its side surfaces extending in face-to-face relationship with the walls, the centrifugal force exerted by the fluid during transmission of torque between the rotor and housing effected by the shearing action of the fluid providing a pressure which increases the spacing between the walls to decrease the transmission between the rotor and housing as the speed of rotation increases. The housing is in the form of a cupshaped member 16 and a movable wall 18, the member 16 having a cover 21 which provides a reaction surface for springs 26, 27 to urge the wall into the member and also clamps a diaphragm 19 to the member; the diaphragm is also clamped to the wall 16. The rotor 37 consists of two plates 38, 39 which are welded together and have their radially outer portions axially spaced apart. The outer portion, which may have facings 42 of cork, asbestos, or other friction material, are provided with holes 43 44, Fig. 2, which, together with the space 41 between the outer portions and tangential slots 46, Fig. 3, in the member 16 and wall 18 or the rotor, toroidally circulate the fluid to effect cooling thereof; fins 15 also assist in the cooling of the fluid The rotor is supported on splines 35 formed on a sleeve 32 which is rotatably mounted on a bearing 10 and driven by a V-belt from the engine. During operation, as the speed of the rotor increases, the centrifugal force of the fluid moves the wall 18 away from the member 18 against the action of the springs to increase the spacing from the rotor and reduce the torque transmitted by the coupling. Removal of a plug 36 permits filling of the coupling with fluid, such as silicon oil, to a level 30. Specification 863,532 is referred to.
