Abstract

864,636. Tailgate elevators for vehicles. EDWARDS BROS. (TIPPERS) Ltd., and COSGROVE, J. Feb. 20, 1959 [March 14, 1958], No. 8312/58. Class 78 (4). [Also in Groups XXV and XXVII] The tail- or side-closure board 13 of a vehicle is pivotable about horizontal pivots 14 which are mounted on slides 15 movable on guides 16 to raise or lower the opened board between ground level and the deck or decks of the vehicle. The slides 15 are moved on guides 16 by means of chains anchored at 161, 162 and passing over rollers 31 and sprockets 28, 30, the sprockets 28 being mounted on a shaft 27 which is rotated through a worm and pinion by an hydraulic motor 22, such as that described in Specification 864,635, supplied with pressure-fluid by a pump 18, Fig. 1 (not shown), driven by the vehicle engine and controlled by a three-way valve 21 provided with a control handle 211. The motor 22 is stopped when the board reaches ground or deck level by stops 151, 152 engaging the handle and returning it to its neutral position. When heavy loads are being raised on the board, the increased pressure in the hydraulic circuit is communicated through a device 33, Fig. 5 (not shown) (see Group XXVII), to accelerate the vehicle engine and, thereby, the pump 18. In a modification for vehicles with more than one deck, Fig. 7 (not shown), each deck is provided with a control handle 211, the handles being coupled by pivoted links and provided with catches which may be moved into the path of the stops 151, 152 to stop the board at a predetermined level. In a further modification, Fig. 8, in order to close the board, it is raised above the deck level and a link 35 is pivoted between a bracket 131 on the board and a point 36 on the guide 16, so that on lowering the board it turns about pivots 14 into the closed position.
