Abstract
863,676. Coupling wire ropes &c. BRITISH ROPES Ltd. June 27, 1958 [July 3, 1957], No. 21058/57. Class 109. [Also in Group XXVIII] The ends of two steel wire ropes or strands are joined by a steel ferrule 1 having a portion of reduced wall thickness forming a cavity within the compressed ferrule in the region of the extreme wire ends to relieve the pressure thereon. The ferrule may be externally waisted or have an internal cavity in which the wire ends can spread and the frictional grip may be increased by the application to the wire ends, of an abrasive substance, e.g. silicon carbiole. Circular or helical grooves can be provided on the outer or inner surface of the ferrule. The ends may be compressed radially either by rotary swaging, split half or quarter dies, which may have suitable projections to produce undulations of the ferrule bore after pressing.
