Abstract

863,616. Moulding plaster &c. slabs. KAUFFMANN, E. I. July 2, 1957 [July 21, 1956], No. 20909/57. Class 87(2). In the casting in a flexible mould 4 of a slab 12, Fig. 1, of plaster or other hardenable plastic material, a non-flexible plate-like insert 15 is first placed in the mould to cover the bottom of the mould at least partly, and after casting is removed from the mould together with the slab produced, and subsequently separated from the slab. If deep recesses are required in the lower surface of the slab the insert may comprise a layer of rigid material covered by a layer of rubber or like material contoured for forming the required recesses. Slabs may be continuously moulded in apparatus comprising an endless conveyer 3, Fig. 2, composed of flexible moulds 4 or of a rubber or synthetic resin belt having mould frames secured thereto. A plate like insert of glass, synthetic resin, metal, or other rigid material is laid in each mould as it approaches a hopper 5 supplying plastic material. On leaving the hopper 5 each mould passes over a vibrating device 6 which compacts the moulding material, and the latter is levelled by a doctor blade 16 and allowed to set as the mould passes over a rigid plate 7. At the guide roller 2 the conveyer moves downwardly so that the moulds disengage from the cast slabs which, supported by the insert plates 10, Fig. 3, pass to a conveyer belt 9 from which the slabs may be removed and the elements 10 detached manually therefrom. The inserts 10 may be heated before being laid in the moulds in order to facilitate setting of the moulding material.
