Abstract
863,465. Shoe making machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). June 3, 1957 [June 6, 1956], No. 17426/56. Class 17(1) A support for a last L comprises a last peg 58, positioning means 44, 46 to co-operate with positioning faces 36, 38 on the last L to determine a selected orientation of the last, and sensing means comprising a displaceable member 50 which is moved by a last engaged with the support in the selected orientation, i.e., the sensing member is displaced only when a complementary last and support are mated. (As shown a displaced sensing member actuates means for conveying the support and last.) Each pallet has wheels 26 to engage in rails 12, 14 (not shown), a spring clip 48 to hold the last securely to the pallet, and slots 53 in which the positioning lugs 44, 46 are mounted. The positioning plate 34 has two pairs of positioning faces 36, 38, the former equidistant from the centre line of the last, and the latter equidistant from the centre line of the heel, and is secured to the crown face of the last one way up for left shoes and the other way up for right shoes, slots 53 always lying on the inner side of the shoe. Lugs 44, 46 are interchangeable, and lug 46 may be arranged so that its effective portion extends from either end of a slot in the pallet. The lugs may thus be arranged in any one of four positions, i.e., to engage faces 36 of right shoes, faces 36 of left shoes, faces 38 of right shoes, or faces 38 of left shoes, and because of the shapes of plates 34 and lugs 44, 46 complementary last and pallets only can be fully assembled together. Such assembly displaces rod 50 downwardly, against spring 51, to project from the bottom of the pallet. A wheel 52 projecting above the pallet also prevents complete assembly of lasts and pallets which are not complementary. The conveyer comprises a driven belt 18 with lugs 20 guided by wheels 22 and rods 24 (not shown), and drive is imported to the pallet by engagement of a lug 20 with a finger 62 rotatable and movable endwise on a bail 63 on the pallet which is spring biased to hold the finger in the path of the lugs. If movement of the pallet is arrested the lug 20, continuing to move, overcomes spring 67 to swing and raise finger 62 clear of the lug, the finger then falls into the path of the next lug and is again raised &c., the process continuing until the pallet is free to move. An auxiliary yieldable drive may be provided comprising a drive chain 172 and finger 170 biased by springs 178, and 182. As the pallet approaches the loading station a deflecting plate 86 fixed on bail 63 is deflected upwardly by a cam 88, disengaging finger 62 from lug 20, and then engages stop 83 mounted on a slide 84. Rebound is prevented by a spring biased latch 90. The bail 63 of the next trailing pallet then slides up cam 93 of the first pallet and so disconnects the drive of the trailing pallet, rebound being prevented by engagement of a spring-biased hook 94. When a right last and pallet are fully assembled rod 50 is depressed and lowers an arm 100 to close microswitch M2, and assembly of a left last and pallet similarly closes microswitch Ml. Circuit C1 is thus completed, energizing coil K1 which closes contacts K1a to complete the holding circuit C2, and K1b to complete circuit C3. A solenoid S1 in the latter then moves slide 84 to retract stop 83 from the deflecting plate 86 of the pallet and permit movement of the pair of pallets from the loading station. The next pallet is thus freed for connection to the drive. As a pair of pallets leaves the loading station a finger 110 on the left pallet engages an arm 112 (not shown) and opens microswitch M3, coil K1 and solenoid S1 are thus de-energized, and the latter releases slide 84 which is returned by a spring and positions stop 83 to engage and arrest the next pallet. Specification 863,464 is referred to.
