Abstract
863,194. Explosive devices. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. April 17, 1959 [June 3, 1958], No. 13194/59. Class 9(1). An explosive device for generating linear detonation wave fronts, as in Specification 878/196, comprises ari inert barrier separating a pair of sets of spaced explosive trains, the sets being arranged in parallel planes and the trains of one set being inclined to the trains of the second set, so that a grid pattern is formed by the two sets. The barrier is of such a thickness that small delays are produced in the passage of the detonation wave from one set of trains to the other, thus compensating for any shortening of the path of the wave from an initiation point to a point on the boundary line produced by such "short cuts". In an example, a device to produce a square detonation front, Fig. 2, was made by using a 6 inch square brass plate engraved with parallel diagonal grooves to produce similar grooves in lead foil squares 0À005 inch thick. PETN slurry containing gum arabic was poured over the foils 2, Fig. 5, and wiped clear of the lands between the grooves. After drying the explosive, the foils were united by adhesive coated inert material 4. An electric blasting cap was placed at the centre P o , Fig. 2, to produce simultaneous detonation at points on the periphery. To obtain triangular devices, the square may be cut diagonally into four. The grooves may be spirally formed in circular discs, one or more initiators being placed at points on the circumference to produce a circular wave front travelling towards the centre. RDX, HMX, tetryl, lead azide and nitroglycerine may be used instead of PETN. Instead of lead foil, materials such as paper, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, cloth; felt or cork may be used. The explosive may also be applied directly to the opposite surfaces of an adhesive coated cardboard barrier. Specifications 564,211, 618,617 and U.S.A. Specification 2,774,306 are referred to.
