Abstract

863,099. Composite artificial fibres. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. May 29, 1959 [June 9, 1958], No. 18415/59. Class 2(2). [Also in Group XXIII] Composite fibres of resinous materials are produced by feeding separate streams of the materials to separate compartments in a rotating spinner, through holes in which the materials are projected by centrifugal force, each fibre being formed partly of both materials, In the form shown the spinner 20 is divided by a central horizontal partition 24 and has a ring of holes 27, each of which communicates with the spaces on either side of the partition. A stream of material 12 is fed through a central hole in the partition 24 to the space below it and another stream 14 is fed to the space above the partition. The composite streams from the holes 27 are blown downwards by the blast from a ring of burners. In other embodiments the holes are distributed vertically as well as horizontally about the spinner, which contains internal partitions so that each hole is fed partly from both streams of material. By choosing materials of different coefficients of expansion a curly fibre is produced.
