Abstract
862,455. Capacitors. HUNT (CAPACITORS) Ltd., A. H. Oct. 2, 1959 [July 3, 1958; July 23, 1958], Nos. 21389/58 and 23668/58. Class 37. A wound capacitor has electrodes 13, 14 projecting from opposite ends of the winding 12, and electrical contact is made with electrodes 13, 14 by metallic end plates 15, 16, provided with radial grooves or hollows 18 which allow drying and impregnation of the capacitor when the end-plates are in place. Winding 12 is on an insulating core 11 e.g. of resin-bonded fibreglass, and the electrode foils are interrupted every few turns to reduce the inductance of the capacitor. A layer of wire gauze 211 or other springy material is disposed between plates 15, 16 and electrodes 13, 14. Terminals 21, 22 are threaded on to core 11 and contact plates 15, 16. An insulating casing 25 projects endwise beyond plates 15, 16 which are sealed in position by insulating material 29 e.g. epoxy resin. Casing 25 may be a tube of resin-bonded fibreglass, or may be formed by a number of windings of impregnated fibreglass sheet. Eyelets 28 communicate with the interior of the capacitor through space 24 and holes 20 in grooves 18 and are sealed off after impregnation. In the capacitor of Fig. 4 core 11 is tubular and a conductor 36 is sealed therein by a polymerized resin 37 preferably having the same dielectric constant as the core. Members 34, 35 contact end-plates 15, 16 (not shown) and conductor 36 is brazed, soldered or welded on to member 34. Sockets 42 are provided so that two or more capacitors may be connected in a chain by way of double-ended split pins inserted in sockets 42, members 35 of two adjacent capacitors being bolted together. Conductor 36 may be a fusible wire.
