Abstract

Fibrous titanium dioxide having a fibre diameter of less than 25 microns and an axial ratio of at least 10 : 1 is prepared by reacting titanium tetrachloride, tetrabromide, or tetralodide with an oxygen containing gas in the presence of a metal chloride melt. The metal chloride is preferably an alkali or an alkaline earth metal chloride or a mixture thereof and the reaction is normally effected at 600-800 DEG C. The reactants may be fed separately to the melt; for example titanium tetrachloride may be passed into the metal halide melt which is then exposed to oxygen whereupon titanium dioxide fibres grow on the surface of the melt. Alternatively, the titanium tetrahalide/oxygen mixture may be passed over or through the melt. The titanium dioxide fibres may be separated from the melt by solution in water or other solvent for the metal halide and the suspension obtained may be filtered to obtain a mat or felt of titanium dioxide fibres. The aqueous or other suspensions may contain binders such as organic resins, sodium silicate, colloidal alumina or silica and the suspensions may also contain fillers such as silica, carbon, or asbestos. Examples refer to the use of potassium chloride and sodium chloride melts and mixtures thereof with lithium or calcium chlorides.
