Abstract

Epoxy resins are hardened by the addition of a diimidazoline of the formula <FORM:0861796/IV (a)/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H or C1-5 alkyl groups, k is an integer from 1-5, and A is a direct link or a straight chain hydrocarbon radical. Epoxy resins specified are the reaction products of polyhydric phenols with polyfunctional halohydrins (e.g. epichlorohydrin) and/or glycerol dichlorohydrin and are complex glycidyl ethers containing at least one terminal epoxy group per molecule; polyhydric phenols specified are resorcinol and the dihydric phenols obtained from the condensation of phenol with formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone or methyl ethyl ketone (e.g. bisphenol A). The diimidazolines are preferably prepared (see Group IV (b)) from appropriate aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (e.g. maleic acid, alkylene dicarboxylic acids or acids of the formula HOOC.(CH2)g.COOH, where g is a whole number from 0-11) and aliphatic polyamines of the formula H2N.(CR1R2-CR3R3-NH)kH (e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, di-1,2-propane triamines or mixtures thereof). Examples are given. Uses.-Glass cloth laminates; electrical imbedment; heat-resistant coatings; adhesives; casting.ALSO:Diimidazolines of the formula <FORM:0861796/IV (b)/1> where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are H or C1-5 alkyl groups, k is an integer from 1-5, and A is a direct link or a straight chain hydrocarbon radical, may be prepared by reacting appropriate aliphatic dicarboxylic acids (e.g. maleic, alkylene dicarboxylic, or acids of the formula HOOC.(CH2)g.COOH, where g is a whole number from 0-11) with aliphatic polyamines of the formula: H2N(CR1R2-CR3R4-NH)kH (e.g. ethylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, di-1,2-propane triamines or mixtures thereof). The diimidazolines are used for hardening epoxy resins (see Group IV (a)). In the examples the acid is added slowly to the amine over a period of 3-6 hours reaching the maximum temperature specified. Diethylene triamine is reacted with the following acids: (1) adipic 243 DEG C.; (2) azelaic 260 DEG C.; (3) sebacic 250 DEG C.; (5) maleic 192 DEG C.; and (6) oxalic dihydrate in two stages: (a) to 160 DEG C. in 1 1/2 hours; (b) to 208 DEG C. in a further 3 hours. In Example (4) triethylene tetramine is reacted with adipic acid up to 275 DEG C.
