Class 86 A mixing and kneading machine for rubber and similar plastic materials comprises intermeshing helical gears 3 in which each gear has two oppositely inclined sections separated by an annular groove 3a, 3b. The material is forced into contact with the gears by the spring-pressed piston 4 and is conveyed downwards between the teeth and in contact with the walls of the mixing chamber, the inclination of the teeth displacing it into the groove where when reaching the middle portion of the groove 3b it is conveyed upwardly to the top of the mixing chamber.
