Abstract
861,090. Packaging surgical sutures. ZOLLER, H. F., and NEUMEYER, J. L. April 9, 1958 [April 9, 1957], No. 11227/58. Classes 81 (1) and 81 (2). [Also in Group XVII] A sealed tearable envelope 11, Fig. 2, containing ligatures or sutures 17, in a sterilizing solution such as alcohol, includes a tab 16 arranged within and secured to one end 12 of the envelope, the sutures 17 being looped through this tab so that they are automatically withdrawn from the envelope when the end 12 is torn off. Within the envelope 11 the sutures 17 are protected by a flattened sleeve 18 that is open at at least one end. The envelope 11 may be of paper, plastic or metal foil with one or more notches formed in its sealed edges to indicate where it may be torn, and it may be of such length that the sutures 17 are not folded except where they pass through the tab 16. The envelope 11 may contain a sterilizing liquid to wet the sutures and a plurality of the sealed envelopes 11 may be packed in a container 31, Fig. 5, also containing a sterilizing solution 33. The specific gravity of each package should be sufficient to cause it to be fully immersed in the solution 33 and one end of the package should be weighted, as by a fold of the metal foil 14, to cause the package to stand up in the solution so that it may readily be grasped by tongs or other instruments. Specifications 638,257 and 739,347 are referred to.
