Abstract

Tertiary aliphatic methyl amines are prepared by progressively adding formaldehyde, or a substance yielding same, to an amine of the formula R1NH2, (R1)2NH, R1R2NH or R1NH(CH2)3NH2 (wherein R1 and R2 represent C8-22 aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals) maintained in the liquid phase under hydrogen pressure, in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and an aliphatic monobasic carboxylic acid containing at least two carbon atoms, an aliphatic hydroxy monobasic carboxylic acid containing at least two carbon atoms, an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid containing at least three carbon atoms or an aromatic carboxylic acid. R1 and R2 may be alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl or alkatrienyl radicals, or mixtures thereof, e.g. as derived from tallow, coconut oil, soybean oil and tall oil. Specified hydrogenation catalysts are Raney nickel and noble metals. Specified carboxylic acids are acetic, propionic, butyric, lactic, adipic and benzoic acids. n-Heptadecyl amine is prepared by Raney nickel hydrogenation of n-hexadecane nitrile.
