Abstract
860,624. Honing. ALEXANDER MACHINERY Ltd., G. H. Nov. 24, 1959 [Dec. 1, 1958], No. 38614/58. Class 60. A rotary honing tool comprises in combination a plurality of substantially cylindrical sections each having formed in its periphery a plurality of angularly spaced slots extending at inclinations to its axis, means interconnecting said sections in abutting co-axial relationship to form a substantially cylindrical body part, a plurality of honing elements located in the slots of each section respectively, and means axially movable within the body part for imparting simultaneous radial movements to the elements in all sections. The body part is formed by sections 4a, 4b, 4c each having an integral annular flange. The flanges or sections 4c, 4b engage recesses in sections 4b, 4a respectively and the flange on section 4a engages a recess in a hollow shank 11 rotated through a sleeve 12. The sections 4a, 4b, 4c and shank 11 are connected co-axially by screws 5. Each section has in its periphery angularly spaced straight slots 6 inclined to the axis. In each slot is a stone 7 mounted on a holder 8 retained in the slot by a circumferential wire band 9. Each stone 7 has its ends flush with the ends of the section. Each stone holder 8 has a tappet 10 passing radially through a hole in the base of the slot 6 into the bore of the section. The inner ends of the tappets co-operate with conical surfaces 15a, 15b, 15c on a wedge piece 15 prevented by a pin 16 from moving angularly. In screwthreaded engagement with the wedge piece 15 is the end of a spindle 13. The spindle is prevented by a pin 14 from moving axially of the shank 11, but can be moved angularly, resulting in axial movement of the wedge piece to feed the stones outwardly. The mid-points of the slots 6 may, as shown, be in alignment in an axial direction, or the adjacent ends of the slots may be in register in which case the tool can be used to have bores with ports or keyways.
