Abstract

A method of manufacturing a permselective membrane comprises the formation of a film of a polymer which is subjected to the action of high voltage electrons, X-rays, gamma rays or similar high energy ionizing radiation, to cause cross-linking of the material of the film to form a film which is insoluble in water or aqueous solutions of electrolytes, the film either being formed from a monomer or polymer of a substituted olefin of which one of the substituents is an acid or basic ionic group or being formed from a non-ionic monomer or polymer which is polymerized and/or cross-linked by the ionizing radiation to form a non-ionic cross-linked polymer, into which acid or basic groups are introduced by chemical reaction after the crosslinking. Starting materials containing ionic groups include acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, crotonic, maleic and fumaric acid, vinyl sulphonic acid, ortho or para vinyl benzoic or vinyl benzene sulphonic acid, 2- or 4-vinyl pyridine, ortho or para vinyl benzylamine, dialkylaminoethyl acrylates and methacrylates and polymers p thereof. Non-ionic monomers include styrene, vinyl toluene, alpha-methyl styrene, divinyl benzene, acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylamide, methacrylamide and acrylonitrile, ionic groups being introduced into polymers thereof by e.g. hydrolysis or sulphonation. The membrane may be supported on a substrate of a material resistant to strong acid or alkaline solutions, such as a fabric woven from glass fibres or polyethylene or polyvinylidene chloride monofilaments, such supported membranes being preferably prepared by depositing monomer on the substrate and then polymerizing and further treating if necessary.
