Abstract
860,203. Feeding filaments to lamp stem assembling machines. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Oct. 21, 1958. No. 33662/58. Class 39 (2). [Also in Group XXX]. A machine for successively transferring lamp filaments from a reservoir into a receiver associated with a lamp stem assembling machine comprises an elongated trough, a receiver spaced from and in alignment with the long axis of the trough, a carriage mounted to slide parallel to the long axis of the trough and having gripping fingers and means for actuating the fingers to pick up a filament in the trough and drag it axially to the receiver. The filaments are placed in a vibratory feeder bowl 32, Fig. 3, the vibrations causing them to travel up the sides of the bowl into a channel 38 whence they travel into an aligned trough 52 mounted to vibrate in a manner to produce axial movement of the filaments, surplus filaments returning by a shoot 58 to the bowl when the trough is full. Baffles 40 are provided in the bowl to prevent tangling of the filaments. A carriage 104, Fig. 4 slidable parallel to the long axis of the trough carries a pair of fingers 76 between which is a third finger 78 having a pair of parallel teeth at the lower end. The upper part of the fingers 76 has a cam surface 98 acted upon at timed intervals by a cam 96 to cause the fingers to open and grasp the end of a filament in one or other of the teeth, the carriage then being moved to the right to trail the filament over a receiving device 210, Fig. 3, comprising a pair of grooved posts 212 in which the ends of the filament rest and by which the filament is fed to a lamp stem assembling machine whereafter the carriage is returned to the position for picking up a fresh filament. All the movements are performed in timed relation by means of bell-crank levers operated by cams on the main part of the machine. U.S.A. Specification 2,597,354 is referred to.
