An underframe for an elevated monorail vehicle which straddles a track 1 in saddlelike manner comprises wheel boxes 2 housing the running gear which are connected by a high-webbed, central longitudinal girder 3. Sheet-metal boxes 5 filled with a foamed material, as cellular polyvinyl chloride, are rigidly connected to transverse members 4 secured to the girder to increase torsional rigidity of the vehicle. The tops of the boxes are formed by the floor-plate of the vehicle and the bottoms are wholly or partly formed by the web of the girder.
