Abstract

Amphoteric ion exchange polymers are derived from monomeric dialkyl or diaryl hydrogen phosphates by reaction of the phosphonates with suitable polymeric materials followed by partial hydrolysis to introduce the amphoteric properties. The resulting polymers have the structural unit formula: <FORM:0859834/IV(a)/1> where R is an alkyl or aryl group, R1 and R2 are alkyl or aryl groups or hydrogen atoms or comprise a unit of a polymeric chain, and R3 and R4 are alkyl or aryl groups or hydrogen atoms or comprise a unit of a polymeric chain or together with the nitrogen atom form a piperidine or morpholine group, but are not both hydrogen atoms, at least one of R1, R2, R3 and R4 being a unit of a polymeric hydrocarbon chain. Examples are given of the preparation of the following polymeric hydrocarbon chains: (1) acetaldehyde-aminomethyl polystyrene, (2) pyridine-2-aldehyde-imino polystyrene, (3) resacetophenone-formaldehyde-ethylamine condensate and (4) diazotised amino polystyrene. Hydrocarbon chains (1)-(3) are converted into the ion exchange resin by reaction with diethyl hydrogen phosphonate and hydrocarbon chain (4) is converted by reaction with diethyl alpha-ethylamine ortho-hydroxybenzyl phosphonate (see Group IV(b). The amphoteric properties are introduced by treatment with hydrobromic acid followed by aqueous sodium hydroxide. Specification 855,009 is referred to.ALSO:Diethyl alpha-ethylamino orthohydroxybenzyl phosphonate is prepared by refluxing a mixture of salicylaldehydeethylimine and diethy hydrogen phosphonate in xylene. The product is in the form of colourless crystallinie plates of melting point 305 DEG -306 DEG C. Specification 855,009 is referred to.
