Abstract
An amphoteric ion-exchange resin comprises a monoallyl substituted-aminomethyl phosphonate polymer of the unit formula: <FORM:0855009/IV(a)/1> where R1 and R2 are alkyl groups or hydrogen, and R3 and R4 are alkyl or aryl groups or hydrogen or together with the nitrogen atom form a piperidine or morpholine group, but are not both hydrogen. They are prepared by reacting a polymer of diallyl hydrogen phosphate with a mixture of an aliphatic aldehyde or ketone and a primary or secondary amine, or with a reaction product of the aldehyde or ketone and the amine, and then partially hydrolysing the product, Suitable reactants are: aldehydes and ketones-formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, propaldehyde and acetone; amines-methylamine, ethylamine, aniline, dimethyl and diethyl-amine, N-ethylaniline, piperidine and morpholine; reaction products of aldehydes or ketones with primary amines-acetaldehyde-, propaldehyde-and acetone-ethylimines; and the reaction products with secondary amines-methylol-diethylamine. Partial hydrolysis may be effected by refluxing with alcoholic potash. The exemplified resin is monoallyl alpha-ethylamino-ethyl phosphonate polymer. The resins have a greater affinity for divalent transition metal ions than for uranyl ions; it is believed that complexes are formed having the structure <FORM:0855009/IV(a)/2> where M is the metal.
