Abstract

Linear poly(cyclo) acetals capable of forming films and fibres are prepared by condensing at least one tetrahydric alcohol, the hydroxymethyl groups of which are in paris in the a : o position, with at least one acetal of a saturated aliphatic dialdehyde in which the two acetal groups are separated by a carbon chain. Tetrahydricalcohols to be used are represented by the formula: <FORM:0859483/IV(a)/1> in which R is a carbon atom, an aliphatic chain, or a cyclo-aliphatic group which may contain unsaturation and the hydroxymethyl groups are in pairs in the a : o position. Acetals to be used are those acetals prepared from aliphatic dialdehydes of general formula: <FORM:0859483/IV(a)/2> in which n is at least 1 and preferably 3 to 10. Alcohols specified are pentacrythritol and 1, 1, 8, 8-tetrahydroxymethyl octane. Acetals specified are 1, 1, 5, 5-tetra (ethoxy) pentane, 1, 1, 6, 6-tetra (ethoxy) hexane, 1, 1, 7, 7-tetra (ethoxy) heptane, 1, 1, 8, 8-tetra (methoxy) octane, 1, 1, 8, 8-tetra (ethoxy) octane, 1. 1. 10, 10-tetra (ethoxy) decane and 1, 1, 12, 12-tetra (ethoxy) dodecane. Specification 718,502 and German Specification 898,517 are referred to.
