Abstract

859,354. Producing magnesium metal electrolytically. DOW CHEMICAL CO. March 5, 1959, No. 7740/59. Class 41 Magnesium metal is produced by electrolysis of a molten electrolyte consisting of a mixture of at least 5 to 44 % Mg C1 2 and 56 to 95% of potassium chloride, and up to 1 % of calcium, magnesium or lithium fluorides, calculated as fluorine. The mixture is of lower density than magnesium metal at the operating temperature, whereby the magnesium sinks to the bottom of the electrolytic bath. A suitable apparatus comprises an iron pot 3 having a ceramic lining 4 to contain the electrolyte composition 5. In the cover 6 is mounted heating electrodes 7, raw material feed inlet 8, an outlet 10 for chlorine and other gases, and an anode 12. A steel or graphite cathode 13 is mounted at the bottom of the pot. The electrolyte is heated to a temperature in the range 825‹ to 900‹C., and about 4 to 8 Volts are applied. The magnesium metal accumulates on the cathode, and after removal of any floating sludge, is drawn off through a pipe 11. The magnesium chloride used. to replenish the electrolyte may contain up to 30 % of water without detriment. Graphs are given of the mixture of components used in the electrolyte showing the operative limits.
