Abstract

An oil-in-water type emulsion consists essentially of (1) from 0,5 to 50% by weight of the emulsion of a benzene-soluble methylpolysiloxane of at least 50 cps. viscosity at 25 DEG C. containing from 1 to 15% by weight of silica or C black having a particle size not more than 2 microns, (2) water and (3) from 0,03 to 6,5% by weight of the water of methylcellulose having a viscosity of at least 400 cps. at 25 DEG C. as measured in a 2% by weight solution in water. The siloxanes used preferably have a CH3/Si ratio from 1,9 to 2,1 and may contain terminal trimethylsiloxy or hydroxyl groups, and the cellulose used contains from 27,5 to 32,0% by weight of methoxyl groups. Pigments, rust-inhibitors, antioxidants and fungicides, e.g. sorbic acid, may also be added. In typical Examples (1) a mixture (a) of two (CH3)3SiO 1/2 -end-blocked dimethylsiloxanes of different viscosities and synthetic silica having a particle size of 50m m , was mixed with (b) methyl cellulose and (c) water and sorbic acid, in a colloid mill to form stable emulsion which broke down foams when added to foamed aqueous solutions containing (A) polyoxyethylene sorbitan monooleate and (B) an alkyltrimethylammonium chloride; (4) similar results were obtained when the siloxanes of Examples (1) were replaced by a (CH3)3 SiO 1/2 -end-block dimethylsiloxane of 107 cps. viscosity (at 25 DEG C.) and thinned to a viscosity of 105 cps. with toluene. Uses: for defoaming any aqueous system, particularly in processing foodstuffs. Specifications 639,673 and 689,306 are referred to.ALSO:Defoaming of aqueous systems, particularly those in the processing of foodstuffs, is effected by adding thereto an oil-in-water type emulsion consisting essentially of (1) from 0.5 to 50% by weight of the emulsion of a benzenesoluble methylpolysiloxane of at least 50 cps. viscosity at 25 DEG C. containing from 1 to 15% by weight of silica or carbon black having a particle size not more than 2 microns, (2) water and (3) from 0.03 to 6.5% by weight of the water of methylcellulose having a viscosity of at least 400 cps. at 25 DEG C. as measured in a 2% by weight solution in water (see Group IV(a)). Pigments, rust-inhibitors, antioxidants and fungicides, e.g. sorbic acid, may also be added to the emulsions. In typical Examples (1) a mixture (a) of two trimethylsiloxy-end-blocked dimethylsiloxanes of different viscosities and synthetic silica having a particle size of 50 \m\m, was mixed with (b) methylcellulose and (c) water and sorbic acid, in a colloid mill to form a stable emulsion which broke down foams when added to foamed aqueous solutions containing (A) polyoxyethylene sorbitan mono-oleate and (B) an alkyltrimethylammonium chloride; (4) similar results were obtained when the siloxanes of (1) were replaced by a similar end-blocked siloxane of 107 cps. viscosity (at 25 DEG C.) and thinned with toluene to a viscosity of 105 cps. Specifications 639,673 and 689,306 are referred to.
