Abstract

<PICT:0859298/III/1> <PICT:0859298/III/2> <PICT:0859298/III/3> A packing element, for use in distillation columns, comprises an elongated body having longitudinally extending fins extending outwardly from a solid or tubular core. In Figs. 1 and 2, the packing element has a tubular body 1 with longitudinally extending fins 2 radiating outwardly from the body 1 and similar longitudinally disposed fins 3 extending radially inwards from the body 1. The element is formed with a twist so that both the inner and the outer fins are helically disposed. The outer fins are preferably bevelled off at the top and the bottom ends as at 4, and may be formed with parallel or tapered slits 6, which may be substantially horizontal or inclined and may extend from the outer edges of the fins to the tubular body 1. The inner fins may also be bevelled. In Fig. 3, the packing element comprises a central substantially cylindrical body 9, which may have a central hole 10, and longitudinally extending helical fins 11 radiating outwards from the core, the fins preferably being formed at intervals with slits 12. In each embodiment, the tubular body instead of being circular in section, may be of hexagonal, octagonal, square or rectangular section while the fins may be ribbed longitudinally. The packing elements may be produced from ceramic or other extrudable materials.
