Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0859291/IV(b)/1> wherein X is a nitro or arylsulphonyloxy group and n is an integer from 1 to 3, and a process for preparing o-quinones of the naphthalene series which comprises treating a naphthalene diazooxide, a hydroxy-naphthalene or an amino naphthalene in aqueous acid medium with chlorine or bromine or a compound yielding chlorine or bromine under the reaction conditions e.g. chlorates or hypochlorites. The reaction is preferably carried out in aqueous HCl at elevated temperature. Examples describe the preparation of o-naphthaquinone-mono and di-sulphonic acids and their nitro derivatives, of 5-phenylsulphonyloxy-1, 2-naphthaquinone-7-sulphonic acid and if a quinone of the formula: <FORM:0859291/IV(b)/2> Other reactants and products are mentioned. Specification 819,667 is referred to.
