Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula: <FORM:0859243/IV(b)/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl group containing no more than 4 carbon atoms, and the alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts of these acids and a process for their preparation by reacting a compound of the formula: <FORM:0859243/IV(b)/2> or an alkali metal, ammonium or amine salt thereof with a compound Q-R1 where one of the symbols P and Q represents a group OM where M represents an alkali metal atom and the other represents a halogen atom. The compounds may also be prepared by reacting an alkoxy-methylchlorophenol with a halo-acetic acid or a salt thereof. Examples describe the methoxy compound and its sodium, diethylamine and triethanolamine salts and the ethoxy compound and its sodium salt. Specification 813,367 is referred to.ALSO:A plant growth regulating composition contains one or more components of the formula: <FORM:0859243/I/1> wherein R1 represents an alkyl group containing no more than 4 carbon atoms, and the alkali metal, ammonium and amine salts of these acids, in association with an inert carrier or diluent, the concentration of the compound or compounds being at least 0,5 p.p.m. of diluent or carrier. The compounds may be employed in any of the usual solid or liquid forms and in the case of liquid preparations ionic or non ionic wetting, dispersing and emulsifying agents may be incorporated. The plant growth modifications mentioned are accelerating the functioning of meristematic tissue, formation of new roots and production of parthenocarpic fruit, e.g. on tomatoes.
