Abstract

The invention comprises alkylidene- and alkenylidene-aminoguanidines of the formula <FORM:0932951/IV(a)/1> and acid addition salts thereof, wherein R1 represents a C5-17 alkyl or alkenyl group of which not more than 13 carbon atoms are in a straight chain, and R2 represents hydrogen or a straight or branched C1-5 alkyl group. The compounds are prepared by reacting aminoguanidine, or an addition salt thereof, with a carbonyl compound of the formula R1.CO.R2 and, if desired, converting the product into an acid addition salt or converting such acid addition salt into an addition salt of a different acid.ALSO:A fungicidal composition comprises an alkylidene- or alkenylidene-aminoguanidine of the formula <FORM:0932951/VI/1> or an acid addition salt thereof, e.g. hydrochlorides, phosphates, nitrates, sulphonates, borates, acetates, succinates and phthalates wherein R1 represents a C5-17 alkyl or alkenyl group of which not more than 13 carbon atoms are in a straight chain, and R2 represents hydrogen or a straight or branched C1-5 alkyl group, in admixture with a solid or liquid diluent. Known fungicides, insecticides, bactericides, fertilizers or plant growth regulants may be added. The composition may be formulated as a wettable powder or self-emulsifying concentrate with the aid of an ionic or non-ionic wetting and/or dispersing agent; as a dust obtained by dispersing the active material in sufficient inert absorbent carrier to form a free-flowing powder and diluting the powder with one or more inert carriers; as a fungicidal smoke; or as an aerosol.
