Abstract
A process for the production of an alkyd resin from an epoxy resin comprises reacting the epoxy resin with a fatty oil in the presence of an alkaline catalyst and subsequently heating the reaction mixture with a polybasic carboxylic acid or its anhydride, a monocarboxylic acid containing between 2 or 24 carbon atoms or its anhydride being added either before or during the reaction with the fatty oil, but in the latter case before the turbid mixture or epoxy resin and fatty oil has cleared up, the monocarboxylic acid or its anhydride being in an amount sufficient for the partial esterification of the epoxy resin and to prevent gelation during the reaction with the polybasic carboxylic acid or anhydride thereof. Preferably the epxoy resin, oil and monocarboxylic acid or anhydride are all mixed and reacted at the same time. The epoxy resin may be those obtained by reacting epichlorohydrin or dichlorohydrin, or the corresponding bromine compounds with polyhydric phenols such as resorcinol, catechol, pyrogallol or hydroquinone or their alkylation derivatives or 2, 2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane, 41, 41-dihydroxy-benzophenone or 1, 1-bis (4-hydroxy-phenyl) ethane or with glycerol. The fatty oils may be drying or semi-drying. Suitable oils are linseed, tung, soybean, peanut, hemp, cottonseed, rape seed, kapok seed, perilla, oiticica and fish oils, dehydrated castor oil and blown or heat-bodied linseed oil. Specified monocarboxylic acids are acetic, propionic, butyric valeric, caproic, caprylic, capric, lauric, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, linolenic and eleosteric, those obtained by saponification of linseed oil, dehydrated castor oil, talc oil or other oils, or benzoic or naphthenic acids. Dicarboxylic acids specified are malonic, succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, maleic, fumaric, phthalic; tetrahydrophthalic; hexahydrophthalic, diglycollic and dimerized drying oil fatty acids. Specified anhydrides include Diels-Alder adducts of maleic anhydride with terpenes and cyclopentadiene. Suitable catalysts are sodium or potassium hydroxide, calcium oxide, calcium acetate, magnesium acetate, lead monoxide, zinc naphthenate and sodium methoxide. Another polyhydric alcohol, such as glycerol or pentaerythrital may also be present in the alkyd resin reaction mixture. The products may be used as a base for paints, lacquers and varnishes. Pigments, driers, diluents and phenol formaldehyde, ureaformaldehyde or melamine resins may be added. Specification 778,056 is referred to.
