Abstract

858,794. Blasting fuzes and charges. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. March 20, 1959 [April 21, 1958], No. 9834/59. Class 9(1). A blasting assembly comprises an explosive charge C into which is inserted a non-electric delay initiator D connected to ignition means by detonating fuze cord E, the cord E being as described and claimed in Specification 815,532. The assembly when inserted in a borehole is retained therein by stemming F. The initiator preferably comprises a shell G, Fig. 2, containing a base charge H of detonating explosive, and a primer charge J of heat-sensitive explosive abutting a delay element above which is an ignition charge M, such as boron and red lead, to be ignited by the cord E which is crimped into the shell. The delay element is a rigid tube L filled with a delay composition K such as selenium and barium peroxide. A metal capsule N having a flash passage P is inverted over the charge M. Several boreholes each loaded with a blasting assembly may have their respective cords E connected to a common energizing source such as a length of Primacord actuated by a cap and safety fuze, so that all the cords E are detonated almost simultaneously.
