Abstract

Phthalein and fluorescein derivatives of the formulae: <FORM:0858019/IV (c)/1> where X is -CO- or -SO2-, R1 and R2 are halogen, or hydrogen or a straight or branched chain aliphatic hydrocarbon group and R is the group -CH2N(CH2COOH)2 are made by condensing dyestuffs of the formulae: <FORM:0858019/IV (c)/2> with iminodiacetic acid and formaldehyde by heating in an acid medium comprising an excess of formic or acetic acid and in the presence of a sufficient amount of univalent cations to dissolve at least partially at least one of the otherwise insoluble components, viz., the dyestuff and iminodiacetic acid, and thereafter concentrating the reaction mixture and precipitating the product by adding methanol, ethanol, propanol or butanol or mixtures thereof. The invention also comprises the particular derivatives of the formulae: <FORM:0858019/IV (c)/3> <FORM:0858019/IV (c)/4> The derivatives are used as indicators in complexometric titrations.
