The field coils of a variable-speed universal motor are wound with equal numbers of turns of thick wire and thin wire randomly wound together on each pole, the thick wire alone being used for high-speed operation, and the thick and thin wire being used in series for low-speed operation. A further additional winding for still lower speed may be employed.
