Abstract

857,961. Artificial islands and docks. DE LONG CORPORATION. Oct. 19, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 35370/59. Class 68(2). A mobile marine apparatus for handling heavy loads e.g. pre-cast concrete sections of marine structures, comprises a pontoon 10 with lateral enlargements 14 and four supports 16 which can be extended downwards by means of jacking mechanisms 22 of known type. Also mounted on the pontoons are four columns 24 which support a gantry bridge 26. The bridge which can be moved up and down the columns by jacking mechanisms and has a pair of openings to provide clearance for the supports 16, is constructed of box girders 28 for the sides linked by cross members 34 and 36. The lower flanges of the side members carry skid rails 40 along which runs a large capacity gantry 46. On the top surface of the side members 28 are rails 48 on which run the wheels 50 of a travelling gantry, which itself has rails 56 for a swivelling crane 60. In operation the pontoon is towed to the working site with the supports 16 raised and the bridge 26 lowered. At the site the supports 16 are extended to the marine bottom, the bridge is raised and the crane 60 is used to lift heavy duty load carrying bars 47 which are attached to the large capacity gantry 46 and support a load 64.
