857,669. Fluid-pressure servomotor-control systems. EKSTROMS MASKINAFFAR A.B., A. April 26, 1957 [April 27, 1956], No. 13459/57. Class 135. Apparatus for transforming a force varying as the square of a quantity to be measured into a linear indication of the quantity comprises an arm 504 pivoted at 535 and having connections at its free end with a measuring member, e.g. a diaphragm 546 subject to the pressure difference due to fluid flow through an orifice 2 in a conduit 1, a spring 502 the other end of which is connected to a piston-rod 509, and a piston valve 531 controlling the pressure of a fluid acting on the piston 508 in opposition to a spring 510. The arrangement is such that the pressure on the upstream side of the orifice 2 causes leftward movement of the diaphragm and piston valve resulting in pressure fluid being transmitted to the piston 508 which, due to its movement to the right, causes the spring 502 to return the diaphragm 546, the arm 504 and the piston valve 531 to their neutral positions in which the piston valve cuts off the fluid flow to the piston 508. Movement of the diaphragm to the right causes the piston valve to exhaust fluid from the piston 508. When the piston 508 is in its extreme leftward position with a member 513 in engagement with a stop 512, corresponding to zero flow in the conduit 1, the spring 502, whose axis is in alignment with the arm 504 and makes an angle of 102 to 105 degrees with the piston-rod 509, is extended by between 0.5 and 2% of its free length. A pointer 528 carried by the member 513 moves over a linear scale 529 to indicate the rate of flow in the conduit 1.
