857,353. Ladders. BERNER, P. Aug. 11, 1959 [June 24, 1958], No. 20275/58. Class 20(2) A loft ladder 1 is connected to a bracket 6 mounted on the loft floor 7 by two radius arms 3 pivoted at 2 and 4 and is urged upwards by a coil spring 8 one end 10 of which bears on a saddle 12 adjustably mounted on each arm 3 while the other end 9 bears on a rod 11 adjustably mounted in the bracket 6. The effect of the spring 8 may be varied by moving the rod 11 to other holes 15 and by shifting the saddles 12 along the arms 3. The pivot rod 4 also has other positions 14. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the saddle 12 is replaced by a rod adjustably positioned between the ends of a bifurcated radius arm, two springs instead of one engaging the arm at different stages of operation.
