Abstract

Hydrazones of heterocyclic ketones are prepared by the reactions of aqueous hydrazine with a quaternary cyclammonium salt of formula : <FORM:0857198/IV(b)/1> the reaction is <FORM:0857198/IV(b)/2> <FORM:0857198/IV(b)/3> where the R's represent alkyl, carbalkoxyalkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or acyl radicals, X is a divalent alkylene, ortho-arylene or azomethine radical which may be substituted, Y is a divalent ring member (other than substituted carbon), such as oxygen, sulphur, selenium, imino and substituted imino, and Z#q is an equivalent of an anion. Suitable starting materials are the reaction products of dimethyl sulphate or 2-mercapto compounds of the thiazole, oxazole, selanezole, imidazole, thiadiazole or triazole series, which may contain fused-on isocyclic saturated or unsaturated or aromatic rings. The initial materials may carry substituents such as halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, thioether, alkyl-sulphonyl, sulphonamide, carboxylic acid ester, carboxylic acid amide, nitro, amino and acylamino. The product hydrazones may be converted into stable salts by reaction with acids and, if desired, with complex-forming salts such as zinc chloride.
