Abstract

Organisms of the class of predacious Moniliaceae are cultivated in a fermentation medium containing nutrients essential to the growth of the organism, the concentration of available nitrogen in the medium being low. If necessary the concentration of electrolyte in the medium may be high, but it should be below the level at which the electroylte is toxic to the organism. A suitable electroylte is calcium chloride, at a concentration of the order of 4%. Fermentation may be carried out in either deep or surface culture. Any organic source of nitrogen may be used, whey being particularly useful. Carbohydrates (lactosa, corn steep liquor) may also be present. The initial pH of the medium should be between 6,8 and 7,0. After culturing, the fermentation liquor may be freeze-dried to give a free flowing powder containing viable spores. This powder may be suspended in water and used as a spray for soil infested with eelworm. Specifications 800,730 and 800,736 are referred to.
