Abstract
A foundry moulding sand composition comprises up to 10% by weight of an aqueous dispersion of an alkali metal, e.g. sodium, potassium, lithium, silicate having a silicate concentration of at least about 10% by weight and a silica to alkali metal oxide ratio of at least 0,5-1, and an organosilicon additive which is compatible with the aqueous silicate solution and which has an average of 0,9-1,7 monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals per silicon atom in the polymer molecule and wherein there is contained at least 3% by weight of organic substituents consisting of alkoxy radicals having from 1-6 carbon atoms, said organosilcon additive being present in the composition in an amount between 1-15% by weight of the aqueous silicate dispersion in the composition. Three examples of additives are (a) 45% by weight xylene solution of a siloxane co-polymer composed of 75% mol of monomethylsiloxane, 24% mol of dimethylsiloxane and 1% mol of trimethylsiloxane which co-polymer contained about 6% by weight of silicon isopropoxy groups (b) a monopropyl-siloxane containing 15-25% by weight of silicon-bonded ethoxyl groups and (c) an 85% xylene solution of a mixture of 85% by weight of a methoxylated direct process residue and 15% by weight of a methylsiloxane resin. The cores and moulds may be hardened by the CO2 process, in air, or by storing. Specification 714,461 is referred to.
