Abstract

Class 52(5) [Also in Groups XXV and XXXVI] A one-piece fastener or attachment device of a deformable mouldable material comprises a hollow shank 24 having a head 32, a wall 34 at the free end of the shank which when unstressed is convex in one axial direction and which can be deformed so as to be convex in the other axial direction in which latter state it remains in a stressed condition and holds the edge of the shank in a suitably expanded condition providing a shoulder 36 spaced from the head. The material may be nylon or polyethylene. In the form shown the device is used as a rivet, door stop or bumper but it can be provided with a pair of arms extending from the head which terminate in outwardly flaring flanges to co-operate with inturned flanges of a moulding strip. In a modification of this construction a locking pin can extend from the centre of the wall 34 to engage the moulding strip to lock the wall in its shoulder forming position. In a further modification the head can be formed with a resilient arm for use as a cable or conduit clip. In another modification the wall can have a centrally positioned aperture through which a cable can be passed and when the wall is moved to its shoulder forming position the whole grips the cable to form a dust and moisture tight seal. The edges of the hole in the wall can be radially corrugated. The edge of the shank may be provided with circumferentially spaced notches so that the formation of the shoulder is facilitated; alternatively a plurality of radially extending ribs can be provided. The centre of the wall can also be provided with a reinforcing dimple where it is not apertured. The wall end of the shank can be formed slightly larger than the rest of the shank so that when the device is inserted into an aperture it is retained by the enlargement prior to the formation of the shoulder by moving the wall through the dead centre. Instead of the wall being formed so that it is initially concave when viewed from the outside of the shank it can be formed so that it is initially convex and it is then pressed through a dead centre so that it becomes concave viewed from the outside in the process of forming the shoulder.
