Class 27 A coin collector for a telephone pay station comprises a vane 49 rotatable to one of two positions to collect or refund coins by means of an electromagnet 10 having a pivoted armature 19 and pole pieces 37 and 38, the polarity of the pole pieces depending on the direction of current supplied under the control of a central call office to the electromagnet so that they co-operate with a permanent magnet 36 on a selector number 30 to tilt it to one side or the other and the selector member being moved down by an ear 26 on the armature so that it tilts a pivoted cam member 32 one way or the other and correspondingly rotates the vane 29. Tilting of the selector member causes one or other tooth 35, 35a on the cam 32 to be struck by projectors 53 or 54 on the selector member as it moves down and the consequent rotation of the cam brings a protuberance 34 to rest on one or other side 40, 41 of a hump 39 and an aperture 43 engaging an arm 42 on the vane carries the vane with the cam. An inserted coin tilts a gate 45, allowing contact springs of a relay RL to signal to the central call office, and, together with subsequent coins, comes to rest on a coin trap 48. As the selector member moves down, an ear 51 on a latch 52 is also moved down and the latch is rotated to allow the coin trap to pivot and release the coins for deflection by the vane and, at the same time, the armature 19 moves a rod 46 to restore the gate 45 to initial position. The selector member is preferably made of nylon.
